Primary Care Sports Medicine. That’s a term that covers quite a bit. And that is precisely why Dr. Philip Blaney ultimately chose it for his career. He has a passion for searching out optimal non-operative care and treatment solutions for his patients. He knows how an injury in one area can also negatively affect other parts of the body, which can potentially upset a patient’s ultimate wellness goals. And his decision to work with everyone from children to seniors, with sports injuries or other orthopedic and health needs, is part of what makes Dr. Blaney an invaluable resource for his patients.

“Today, the role of a sports medicine physician is more than just orthopedics,” explains Dr. Blaney. “It really encompasses all aspects of an athlete’s health. As a general physician with a sports medicine specialty, I’m able to address far more than damaged joints, bones, and muscles. To do that, it takes time and intention to create an atmosphere of trust, knowledge, and care with my patients. And really, that’s why I chose medicine – to be able to create and foster those relationships, knowing together we are doing our best to keep them up, moving, and doing the things they love. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s organized sports, casual recreation, or just being able to keep your dog happy with their daily walk. I’m here to help, I love working with people, and I honestly enjoy watching their success in their wellness journey.”

Seriously, what’s not to love about that?

Dr. Blaney joins Crovetti Orthopaedics after serving most recently as Medical Director, Franciscan Sports Medicine, at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, Indiana. During his years as Sports Medicine Physician there, he was named Team Physician for many sports teams, both amateur and professional. To name a few, these teams included the Indianapolis Indians (AAA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates) and Butler University as Head Team Physician, Ft. Wayne Mad Ants (G affiliate of the Indiana Pacers), Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

A Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician and member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), Dr. Blaney is well trained in full-spectrum sports medicine. For more than a decade he has provided medical coverage for national mass sporting events such as the NCAA Final Four tournament, men’s and women’s regional basketball tournaments, collegiate football tournaments, marathons, Ironman competitions, cross country invitationals and All-Stars challenges. He’s been active in numerous leadership positions, served as an international volunteer physician, a University Medical Director, Researcher, Lecturer, Academic Advisor and Teaching Faculty member.

His medical education began with an Associate of Science degree from Dixie State College in St. George, Utah, followed by Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Kinesiology, with emphases in Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics, from Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah.

During his fourth year of medical school, he also earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the John M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University. He then completed his three-year Family Medicine Residency at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, followed by a Sports Medicine Fellowship with Intermountain Healthcare at Utah Valley Orthopedic Center in Provo, Utah.

All of which is simply to say that everyone at Crovetti Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine is thoroughly happy to have Dr. Philip Blaney bring his experience and training to the team here in Las Vegas.

For his part, Dr. Blaney is very excited to be here. “This practice is unique, in that it includes surgeons, general physicians like myself, and different medical specialists – all in one place,” he adds. “I have the medical training and knowledge to discuss surgical matters with our in-house surgeons. And I can work closely with them on cases to help my patients stay healthy both before and after surgery – if they choose a surgical option. If avoiding surgery is their preference, I am there to help them explore the best non-operative solutions. It’s the best of both worlds for them.”

Personable, calm, and friendly, Dr. Philip Blaney is a family man who loves nothing better than spending time with his wife Linda and their four children (Max, Drew, Lily, and Jack). His very active kids keep him busy with each of their individual activity preferences – such as lacrosse, football, swimming, and art. “With our move to Southern Nevada, we have a lot of exploring to do out west, and I look forward to experiencing everything the area has to offer with my kids. Basically, if I’m not with my patients, I can be found with my family, and simply enjoying being a husband and dad.”
